It’s hard to ignore the power of social media marketing when it’s done correctly. The pure volume of people using some form of social media each day provides you and your company with countless opportunities to connect and engage with current and new customers or clients.

  • 23% of users check Facebook 5 or more times per day
  • Facebook has a total of 665 million daily active users
  • Twitter has 288 million monthly active users, but this is rapidly growing, June 2012 to March 2013 saw a 44% growth in use.
  • 69% of Twitter follow are due to friend recommendations
  • 34% of marketers have generated leads using Twitter

So it’s clear to see the reach social media can provide, but as companies…are we doing it right?

Customer interaction is so important. Social media shouldn’t just be used to post or advertise. Users want to see a two way connection and adding that ‘human’ and personal element to your social media helps strengthen your brand. Ignoring tweets or posts, positive or negative, can be seen as rude or lazy and often the result will be angry and frustrated customers.

and how about demographics? It might not be what you think.

  • 48% Male users vs. 52% Female
  • Largest age group is 25-34 followed by 18-24. However, the 45–54 year age bracket is the fastest growing demographic on both Facebook and Google+.
  • Twitter’s fastest growing age demographic is 55 to 64 year olds. This demographic has grown 79% since 2012

The rapid growth in these older age groups highlights the importance of selecting the correct content.

Finally one last thought. How are you reading this today? Mobile use is continually on the rise. 189 million of Facebook’s users are ‘mobile only’. So next time you are having content designed, have a think about how it will appear on mobile or smaller screens.
